Food, Fitness, and Fun: Finding a Healthy Balance for Your Family HiTOPS Educator and Registered Dietician
Designed for : Parents and guardians
“I’m worried about childhood obesity but I don’t know what to do.” “I don’t want to be the food police!” “I don’t want to make my kids hyper about everything they eat, but I want them to be fit and healthy.”
According to the American Obesity Association, 30.4% of adolescents are overweight and 15.5% are obese. Living in a culture that is obsessed with thinness on the one hand, and producing obese children on the other, sends dangerous mixed messages. It is no wonder that many parents are unsure about how to keep their children healthy without making them feel restricted about food choices and forced into physical activity.
This program will provide parents and guardians with information and strategies to develop healthy family habits around diet and exercise. Large group discussion and demonstration is used to present information about basic nutrition, reading food labels, buying food, making exercise fun, and how to incorporate the entire family in making healthy choices. Nutritious and fun recipes, as well as meal and snack ideas, are included.
Our goals are to help parents and guardians: Learn basic factual information about fitness and nutrition Develop strategies for shopping and cooking with children so that families can make healthy choices together Learn techniques for incorporating fitness activities into family life
Average length of program : 90 minutes
