Later, Baby: Pregnancy Prevention HiTOPS Teen Council
Designed for: Males and females, grades 8-12
“Did you know that the US has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any western industrialized country?”
Over 2000 teens get pregnant every day and teen mothers are less likely to finish high school than other teens. In addition, 1 out of 4 girls do not use birth control the first time they have sex, and less than half of male teens use condoms every time they have sex.
This peer-led workshop uses age-appropriate skits and small group discussions to help participants think ahead about behaviors which put them at risk for unwanted pregnancy. Participants discuss the barriers teens face when they want to go to a clinic or use condoms and birth control and then problem-solve ways to overcome some of those barriers. Abstinence, as well as other birth control methods commonly used by teens are shown and discussed.
Our goals are to help students: Discuss the physical and emotional impact of teen pregnancy Identify behaviors that put teens at risk of unplanned pregnancy Learn about strategies for pregnancy prevention, including abstinence and contraceptive methods
Average length of workshop: 90 minutes
Recommended number of participants: 20-100
