Pregnancy Prevention HiTOPS Educator
Designed for: Males and females, grades 8-12
“Did you know that the US has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any western industrialized country?”
Over 2000 teens get pregnant every day in the United States and teen mothers are less likely to finish high school than other teens. In addition, 1 out of 4 girls do not use birth control the first time they have sex, and less than half of male teens use condoms every time they have sex.
In this workshop, students discuss the prevalence of teen sexual activity, teen pregnancy and the use of birth control. Behaviors that put students at high risk for unwanted pregnancy are discussed. Participants learn the history of birth control, and the action, pros and cons, costs, and use of a variety of birth control methods.
This workshop can be presented in one of two ways:
In the 1-session class, the various birth control methods are demonstrated to the class.
In the 2-session class, the students work in small groups to learn about a birth control method then present this method to their classmates with the assistance of the HiTOPS educator.
Our goals are to help students: Define the problem of teen pregnancy in the US Discuss the physical and emotional risks of teen pregnancy Demonstrate the use of contraceptives commonly available
Average length of program: One 45 minute session; Two 45 minute sessions.
