Later, Baby: Pregnancy Prevention HiTOPS Educator
Designed for: Professionals
“Did you know that the US has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any western industrialized country?”
Over 2000 teens get pregnant every day in the United States and teen mothers are less likely to finish high school than other teens. In addition, 1 out of 4 girls do not use birth control the first time they have sex, and less than half of male teens use condoms every time they have sex.
This in-service uses an interactive small group activity to help participants discuss “Who is Responsible” for teen pregnancy in this country. They discuss the barriers teens face when they want to go to a clinic or use condoms and birth control and then problem-solve ways to overcome some of those barriers. Abstinence, as a strategy to decrease teen pregnancy, is discussed, as well as other birth control methods commonly used by teens. The newest methods of contraception will be shown and explained.
Our goals are to help professionals: Learn about the prevalence and impact of teen pregnancy Explore their own values regarding teens who have sex or get pregnant Identify barriers and behaviors that put teens at risk for unplanned pregnancy Learn about strategies for pregnancy prevention, including abstinence and contraceptive methods
Average length of in-service: 90 minutes; half-day; whole day
Recommended number of participants: 20-100
