Risk Proof Your Kids: Learning to Raise Self-Esteem in Kids HiTOPS Educator
Designed for : Parents and guardians
“There are so many things I worry about – drugs, parties, sex, gangs. How can I possibly keep my kids safe?”
Recent research on risk behavior in youth shows that children and teens who have high self-esteem are less likely to become involved in high-risk behaviors such as substance use, sexual behavior, violence and school delinquency. While peers and school environments play a significant role in shaping self-esteem, parents are the most powerful factor in developing and enhancing self-esteem in their own children .
This workshop is designed to support parents’ efforts to enhance the self-esteem of their children with simple, common sense strategies. Using guided imagery, small group discussions, brainstorming and other interactive activities, parents will affirm the techniques they are already using, as well as take home new ideas to help their children develop the self-esteem needed to make healthy decisions. The workshop is designed for parents with children of all ages.
Our goals are to help parents and guardians: Learn about the latest research on teen risk-taking and its relationship to self-esteem Understand how parents influence the self esteem of their children Explore practical strategies for fostering self-esteem in their children
