Bullying and Mean Behavior: Parts I and II

HiTOPS Educator

Designed for: Males and females, grades 6-8

"Basically from third grade to seventh I could count on

someone trying to beat me up every day."

An estimated 160,000 students miss school every day because of fear of being bullied, according to the National Association of School Psychologists and the U.S. Department of Justice. Many school-aged children report multiple encounters with meanness and bullying behavior on a daily basis; on the playground, as they walk to and from school, in the lunchroom and now, over the Internet.

Bullying Parts I and II are interactive workshops that help students increase their awareness of physical, verbal and emotional harassment. Students work in small groups to problem-solve scenarios of different bullying situations, explore the positive qualities of a friendship, and learn the reasons why someone might become a bully. Students learn how to get help for a bullying situation and how to protect themselves emotionally from mean behavior.

Our goals are to help students:

•  Understand what bullying is

•  Learn how to safely avoid or defuse bullying situations and how to protect themselves physically and emotionally.

•  Explore and record their positive qualities.

•  Consider how they treat others.

•  Role-play positive, solution-oriented dialogues with their friends.
