What if I only have sex witih other women?  Do I still need clinical services?

HiTOPS provides services to women who have sex with women.  Services that you can get at the HiTOPS health center include physical examinations, breast examinations to screen for breast cancer and other breast problems, and pap smears to screen for cervical cancer.  Women who have sex with women are at risk for some STDs and can get screening and treatment in the clinic.  In addition, women who have sex with women can get treatment for common health problems such as painful, heavy, or irregular periods, vaginal infections, urinary tract infections and acne at the health center.  We can also provide you with education about safer sexual practices.

Who will take care of me when I go to HiTOPS?

Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives provide healthcare services to our female clients.  Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives are nurses with advanced education and training in providing healthcare to individuals and families.  Nurse practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives are licensed in New Jersey to provide healthcare services.  Physicians are available to consult with the nurse practitioners about your care if that becomes necessary.

What happens during my visit to HiTOPS?

At your first visit, you will be asked to fill out some forms about your health and medical history.  You will be seen by a nurse practitioner who will review your health history with you and ask you questions about why you are here.  The nurse practitioner or nurse midwife may perform a physical examination that can include:

  • Examining your heart, lungs, and abdomen
  • Checking the glands in your neck, armpits, and groin
  • Performing a breast examination
  • Performing a gynecological exam
  • A pap smear
  • STD tests

Do I need to have a complete gynecological examination before starting birth control?

It is not always necessary to have a gynecological examination before starting birth control.  The nurse practitioner or certified nurse midwife will review your health history with you and discuss what type of examination you need when you come for your visit.

How much will it cost?

HiTOPS charges low, reasonable fees for the health services we provide. The fee for your visit depends on the healthcare services we provide.  You may qualify for a discounted rate.  If you need to come to the health center and are worried about your ability to pay, call us and we will discuss a way for you to make payments over time. If you have health insurance, let us know when you arrive, and we will provide you with a bill to submit for reimbursement.

What if I need birth control?

Birth control pills, shots, the patch and the ring are available to HiTOPS clients at our health center.  We also have free condoms and recommend using condoms in addition to birth control pills or shots.

What if I need emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception, sometimes called “the morning after pill,” is available to HiTOPS clients at our health center.  If you are not a HiTOPS client but you need emergency contraception, please call us at 609-683-5155.  We may be able to give you an appointment to come in for emergency contraception or we may be able to refer you to another provider for these services.

What if I just want to talk?

You can make an appointment and come in to talk to a nurse or a nurse practitioner for a fee of $35 per 1/2 hour.  You can come by yourself or with a group of friends or with your sexual partner.  We will be happy to answer ANY questions about your body, relationships, STD protection, birth control or any other sexual or reproductive health questions.  No question or concern is too “silly” or “stupid” to ask.

What if I need condoms?

HiTOPS has free condoms.  If you have questions about how to use condoms correctly, we will be happy to show you how to use them.
