Do I need my parents' permission to come to HiTOPS?

NO.  You do not need your parents' permission for any sexual or reproductive health care service.  No parental consent is needed for reproductive health-related examinations, STD testing, STD treatments, testicular cancer screenings or health counseling related to sexual or reproductive health in the state of New Jersey.

Will you tell my parents that I was at HiTOPS?

NO. All sexual and reproductive health services at HiTOPS are completely confidential. No information about you will be given to your parents or to anyone else without your permission. In a very few circumstances, we are required by law to report medical information to the state public health department. This reporting system is set up to respect your privacy.

Do I need an appointment?

YES. Please call HiTOPS at 609-683-5155 x211 to make an appointment. If you are having a problem and feel you need to be seen right away, please tell us when you call so we can try to help you get seen by a healthcare provider quickly.

Who will take care of me when I go to HiTOPS?

Nurse Practitioners provide healthcare services to our male clients. Nurse Practitioners are nurses with advanced education and training in providing healthcare to individuals and families. Nurse practitioners are licensed in New Jersey to provide healthcare services. Physicians are available to consult with the nurse practitioners about your care if that becomes necessary.

What happens during my visit to HiTOPS?

At your first visit, you will be asked to fill out some forms about your health and medical history. You will be seen by a nurse practitioner who will review your health history with you and ask you questions about why you are here. The nurse practitioner may perform a physical examination that can include:

  • Examining your heart, lungs, and abdomen
  • Checking the glands in your neck, armpits, and groin
  • Performing a genital exam
  • Checking for hernias
  • STD tests if needed

How much will it cost?

HiTOPS charges low, reasonable fees for the health services we provide. The fee for your visit depends on the healthcare services we provide. You may qualify for a discounted rate. If you need to come to the clinic and are worried about your ability to pay, call us and we will discuss a way for you to make payments over time. If you have health insurance, let us know when you arrive, and we will provide you with a bill to submit for reimbursement. We also accept Visa and Mastercard.

What if my girlfriend needs emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception, sometimes called “the morning after pill,” is available to HiTOPS clients at our health center. Because this is a prescription medication, your girlfriend must come to HiTOPS to get emergency contraception. If she is not already a HiTOPS client but needs emergency contraception, please call us at 609-683-5155. We may be able to give her an appointment to come in for emergency contraception or we may be able to refer her to another provider for these services.

What if I just want to talk?

You can make an appointment and come in to talk to a nurse or a nurse practitioner for a fee of $35 per 1/2 hour. You can come by yourself or with a group of friends or with your sexual partner. We will be happy to answer ANY questions about your body, relationships, STD protection, birth control or any other sexual or reproductive health questions. No question or concern is too “silly” or “stupid” to ask.

What if I am a man who has sex with other men?

HiTOPS provides services to men who have sex with men. Services that you can get at the HiTOPS health center include physical examinations, and testicular examinations to screen for testicular cancer. Public health experts recommend yearly STD and HIV testing for men who have sex with men. Testing and treatment for STDs and HIV is available at the HiTOPS health center.  In addition, men who have sex with men can get treatment for common health problems such as respiratory infections, rashes, and acne at the clinic. We can also provide you with education about safer sexual practices.

What if I need condoms?

HiTOPS has free condoms. If you have questions about how to use condoms correctly, we will be happy to show you how to use them.
