The Ring

What is it? How does it work?Vaginal ring

The vaginal contraceptive ring (brand name NuvaRing) contains the hormones estrogen and progesterone (like birth control pills). The ring releases a continuous low dose of hormones that keep the ovaries from releasing eggs and thickens cervical mucus to block sperm from getting into the uterus. It also thins the lining of the uterus so that implantation is unlikely to occur.

How effective is it?
  • 99% effective for preventing pregnancy if used properly
  • The ring does not protect against HIV or other STIs
How do you use it?
  1. Insert the ring into the vagina and leave it there for three weeks. (A woman cannot feel it once inserted properly)
  2. Remove the ring for the 4th week by hooking finger under the rim of the ring and pulling down and out.
  3. During the one-week break, the woman will have her menstrual period. She is still protected from pregnancy during this time.
  4. Insert a new ring after the one-week break.
Pros
  • The ring is very effective and convenient. It only has to be put in once for 3 weeks.
  • A woman can predict when her period will come.
  • Menstrual periods are regular and are often shorter, lighter, and less painful
  • Lower incidence of non-cancerous breast cysts or lumps
  • Lower incidence of cancer of the ovaries and lining of the uterus
  • Little to no weight gain
Cons
  • Hormones increase the clotting factors in the blood and put women at a slightly higher risk for developing a blood clot that could cause a heart attack or stroke. Smoking increases this risk, so women who use hormonal contraceptives are strongly encouraged not to smoke.
  • Side effects may include breast tenderness, headache, nausea and spotting. Most side effects are not serious and often go away.
  • It is expensive unless you get it at a clinic or have health insurance
Where can you get it?

It can be obtained at a doctor’s office or clinic and must be prescribed by a clinician.

When should you use it?

A woman must insert the ring and leave it in place for 3 out of 4 weeks. The ring does not protect against HIV and other STIs. A condom should be used along with the ring every time you have sex. Using condoms can prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and it shows that you care about yourself and your partner.

What does it cost?

$35-$50 per month depending upon insurance coverage and/or place of purchase.
